The Substantial Food life

1. Introduction

What did you eat yesterday? Please remember what you eat on this week. How many times did you eat at home? Do you enjoy eating?

In the Developed countries, people can get abundant food and spend richly food life. As the result of this fact, however, people tend to have an unbalanced diet, and cause the problems of fatting, life-style related disease like diabetes, and more. In such a situation, we could call it rich? Therefore through knowing the current food life in America and Japan, I want readers to revise your food life and think about the substantial food life.

2. The food life of The United States.

a. The current food life in The United States.

Everything is big in America, big cars, big houses, big companies, big foods, and finally big people. According to the investigation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is presumed that 127 million people, it is 64 percent of all Americans, are exceeding the normal weight, 60 million people are obesity, and nine million people are extreme obesity in the United States. 4 million people died of sickness caused by obesity every year.

b. Bad eating habits for the adolescent children.

One of the big problems is the effect of junk food for the boys and girls. In many school dining of America, the meal service are provided by various fast food company. Inviting companies, schools can obtain enormous amount of donation from them. As you know, however, fast foods like pizza, hamburgers, fried chicken and French fries are typical junk food, high calorie, low nutritional value.

In addition, there is soft-drink vending machine. Carbonated soft drinks are the single biggest source of calories in the American diet, providing about 7 percent of calories; adding in noncarbonated drinks brings the figure to 9 percent. Teenagers get 13 percent of their calories from carbonated and noncarbonated soft drinks.

Consumption of carbonated soft drinks peaked in 1998, when consumption was 56.1 gallons per person. In a historic turnaround, consumption was 7 percent lower in 2004. And because some people have switched to diet sodas, the consumption of caloric soft drinks declined by 12 percent.

Soft drinks provide large amounts of sugars (mostly high-fructose corn syrup) to many individuals' diets. Soda pop provides the average 12- to 19-year-old boy with about 60ml of refined sugars a day and the average girl with about 56 teaspoons a day. Those amounts roughly equal the government's recommended limits for teens' sugar consumption from all foods.

c. To break this terrible situation

To break this bad situation, there are innovative new act. As MARGARET SPELLINGS said in her report, Sodexo school service provides the new style of meal service. They are offering healthy foods that keep students well-nourished so that they perform well in the classroom. As they say, we have been a pioneer in working with students and teachers and administrators to educate students about healthy eating and to provide tasty, but nutritious choices. Not only providing the meals, they visit many schools and teach student about healthy food life.

4. The food life of Japan

a. The current food life in Japan.

Old-Japanese food life is known as the one of the ideal styles of eating in the world. Old-Japanese diet contains high protein and low oil. In addition their staple food is rice, it have many dietary fiber, so they could stifle the amount of side dish. It can be said that it is well-balanced diet. However, the current Japanese eating habit is westernized. The new food life lead people take junky food, high calories high oil. By the survey of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, in 1960, the percentage of lipid in the total of the nutrition is 11.4%, but the percentage of 2004 have been raised to 28.7%. What happens on Japanese food life? It can be said that there are 2 reasons.

The one is the interior factor. Old Japanese mainly ate fishes and vegetables mainly. It makes Old-Japanese traditional diet. However in current Japan, fishery and agriculture are turning down. Japanese land is very limited, so people use the land for industry because of its large profit. These days, Japanese self-sufficiency ratio for food is very low so Japan is known as the number-one amount of food import. Another reason is exterior factor. By the opening of the big chain stores of the foreign food company, like McDonald's Japan, the food service industry has been extended.

b. The effect of the changing of the food life.

The changing of the food life effects on deeply the frame of Japanese people. According to the survey of Ministry of Health, Labors and Welfare, in 1945, the average of Japanese 20-years-old men’s height is 165cm and women’s is 153.2cm. On the other hand, in 1995, the average of 20-years-old men becomes 171.1cm and women’s is 158.4cm. On the other hand, the average of BMI is increasing 1.5 point. BMI is one of the index to know the ideal weight of individuals, getting more and more large point, it suggest that it is overweight. The genetic factor can not change in 50years, it could be said that the main factor of frame changing of Japanese people was caused by changing of food life. Japanese become bigger for the good and bad both aspect.

c. The spread of food service in Japan

In Japan, there are a lot of food service companies, for example McDonald's Japan, Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan, Royal host, MOS BURGER, YOSHINOYA, Skylark group, and more. Moreover, in 1975, by the advent of convenience stores opening 24 hours, people can get the meal anytime they want. It makes big impact for Japanese after-war food life. According to the research of Food Service Industry Survey and Research Center, the expenditure of Japanese people for eat out tend to rise up. In 1975, the percentage of eat out is 28.5%, however, the point of 2005 have been raised to 42.6%. The Food service company research and develop the products that the consumers satisfy. It is certainly delicious, so they welcomed it. But the companies tend to neglect nutritional value, so the customers enjoy eating without noticing its risks. One of the serious problems is that customer can not obtain easily the information of meals in detail, how much dietary fiber, salt, oil and more contain. For example, these days, in Japanese food industry, terrible trend have been spread. It is called that MEGA FOOD BOOM. Excessively large foods, 900kcal hamburger, 400g 550kcal pudding, 1100kcal instant noodles, and so on, are getting more and more popular in Japanese people. The amount of monster hamburgers that had been sold a day is 840 thousands, however, how much people knows its calorie. In such terrible situation, what should people do for own health? There are two ways.

d. People should reduce eating out.

The first way is to reduce eating out. This is the way to revise our food life. Increasing the time of cooking by myself, people can revise what they eat everyday. In addition, home-made cooking is easy to adjustment seasoning, the cooker can control the amount of sugar, salt, oil, and so on, for one’s health. To know the meal that we eat every day, it can be the good chance to think own health.

e. People should obtain the ability of choosing the foods.

Another way for ideal food life is the way to get along with the food service industry. People should obtain the ability of choosing the foods needed. These days, the customer can get the much information, moreover in the food service industry they start to provide the data of their products for consumers, for example McDonald Japan and Skylark groups inform of product’s nutritional information on their mobile web page. In this situation, to spend the ideal food life, it becomes more and more important skill for customers to choose the food what they need .

In the present day, the education of eating is getting more and more popular in compulsory education, elementary schools and junior high schools. It teaches the knowledge to choose the food for students, what is ideal diet menu, what nutrients are required a day, the method of calorie calculation, and so on. In addition, some food companies start to join to the field of food education. There is the example McDonald Japan. They visit some elementary school, and teach the knowledge of diet. We can see that there are new relation between people and food industry.

4. Conclusion.

We could have lived without the problem of hunger, and will be able to in the future. It looks there are no problems about the food, however, there are certainly existing. Like Hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure and diabetes, the diseases caused by food life is increasing. To change the life style is surely difficult, but people have to revise their food life, and to find truly substantial food life.

The Substantial Food life

1. Introduction

What did you eat last night? Did you eat at home or out? Did you eat alone or with someone? Had you eaten everything?

Research Proposal

In many developed countries, People can get more than enough food. As the result of this situation, people tend to take only the thing which they like, and the dietary life went wrong. Fatting and lose weighting, leftovers of a meal, and more. Food education is the act of revising the eating habits. Introducing this act, I want readers to review their food life.

I focus on American and Japanese food life. The essays of MARGARET SPELLINGS, SIR GEORGE YOUNG, VYVYAN HOWARD and IZZIE VANN are useful to know the situation of the dietary life of U.S., and the essay of Japan Association of Traning colleges for Cooks is effective for Japanese situation.
